VAF recently won the contract to specify and install acoustic treatments in a community performance hall in Athol Park.
The venue wanted to improve the sound quality of the performance space. They had been receiving complaints from from attending semi professional and professional performance artists of the poor sound quality. Audiences were missing out on the quality of the performances and for non musical events, speeches and presentations were difficult to understand clearly. Vocals were very harsh and the overall sound was very confused and lacked coherency and balance.

Stage and performance area West. After the consultation process we modeled and specified a combination of 80 square meters of absorption panes and 20 of diffraction. Aiming for a final reverberation time of around 1-2 seconds, we achieved this as an improvement from the initial 4 second reverb time first measured. This results in much better speech intelligibility and a balanced music performance.
The customer also requested a look to break up the plain walls and provide a high level of visual interest but staying within a budget. This was achieved with individual curved front panels oriented at 90 degrees to each other creating shape variation and alternating colours to create a repeating pattern.

The venue also operates a restaurant space opening into the main area. The contribution of this space needed to be accounted for and helping the acoustic for the larger hall area also benefited customers in the restaurant area.
Before and after installation.
The result has provided a highly satisfactory performance venue for both vocal and music reproduction. Within budget and installed as promised on time.
